Last November I experienced my first thanksgiving. I loved all the food and so did my husband. We also both like broccoli so today I decided to make a Broccoli Casserole, and enjoy it even if it is not Thanksgiving yet. Let’s cook together and have some fun! 🙂
This recipe makes 1 small casserole, around 4 servings.
Ingredients
- 1 lb (500 g) Broccoli
- 1 Small Chopped Onion
- 3 tbsps Butter
- 1 tbsp Flour
- 4 oz or 110g Cream Cheese
- 2 cups Milk
- Crumbled Salty crackers (1/2 cup)
- 2 tbsp Parmesan Cheese (or any cheese that you prefer)
- Black Pepper
- Nutmeg
- Salt
Making the Broccoli Casserole
I started by breaking up the broccoli into small pieces and boiling them in boiling water and some salt until tender. Once tender, I drained them and rinsed them with cold water to stop them from continuing to cook. I then fried my onions in 2 tbsp of butter on medium heat until they became golden brown. I then added my flour and mixed everything together. The mixture became crumbly. I added the milk and cream cheese and mixed everything together until everything was well combined and no crumbles remained. I then added all the spices and let the mixture simmer until it thickened enough to cover the back of a spoon. The white sauce is now ready.
I sprayed my medium size casserole with some oil then placed the broccoli in the pan. I covered the broccoli with the white sauce I just made. I placed the casserole on the middle rack of an oven preheated to 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 175 degrees Celsius for 15 minutes. Meanwhile I melted 1 tsp of butter and mixed in the crumbled crackers. Once the 15 minutes have passed, I spread the buttered crackers and the Parmesan cheese on top of the casserole, and returned it to the oven. I set the oven to Broil and waited until the top of the casserole is golden brown. Once the top got to the desired color, I removed the casserole from the oven, and let it cool down for about 10 minutes before serving.
Enjoy! 🙂
