Kafta and Potato Pan

Lebanese cuisine has a large variety of dishes and mezas. Kafta in a pan is a very popular dish. Kafta can usually be served on skewers as a part of the Lebanese Barbecue, or in a pan, or even 3arayis (in pita bread). Today we are making the kafta Pan which is a very delicious dish. Let’s cook together and have some fun! ☺️
This recipe makes 4 servings.

Ingredients

For the Kafta Mix:

  • 500g Ground Beef
  • 1/2 pack Parsley (finely chopped)
  • 1 medium Onion (chopped)
  • 2 tsp 7 Spices
  • Black pepper
  • Salt

For the tomato sauce:

  • 1 1/2 cup water
  • 3 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tbsp Pomegranate Molasses
  • 1 tsp 7 Spices
  • 1 tsp All Spice
  • 1 tsp ground Cinnamon
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper

3 medium russet Potatoes (sliced into rounds)
2 Tomatoes (sliced)
1 Onion (sliced)

Making the Kafta Casserole

I started by mixing the Kafta: I added the chopped onion with the chopped parsley and ground beef in the food processor. I processed until everything was combined and homogeneously mixed. I then added the spices; and the Kafta was ready. I took a handful of kafta and shaped it into a cm thick disk. In a skillet I cooked the kafta rounds with some oil for 5 mins on medium heat on each side. I then placed them in the bottom of my baking pan.

Next, I added a layer of sliced tomatoes, followed by a layer of sliced onions, and the final layer was the sliced potatoes (half fried).

Finally, I mixed the tomato sauce ingredients and poured them on top of my baking pan. I baked my pan covered with foil paper in a preheated oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit or 177 degrees Celsius for around 30 mins and then uncovered the pan and baked it for additional 15 minutes.

This is a really basic dish in the Lebanese cuisine and a must try if you haven’t yet.

You can enjoy it with rice on the side or with pita bread and some Hummus. 🙂

Enjoy! 🙂
