Green Peas in Red Sauce (a.k.a. Bazella)

Imagine coming home from school, and asking your mom what’s for dinner? Well one of the common Lebanese dishes is Green peas with carrots in a tomato sauce. Some people make it without meat like us, others make it with beef cubes, or minced beef. This is a comfort food that every Lebanese knows and loves. Let’s cook together and have some fun! 🙂

This recipe makes 4 servings.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb or 500g Frozen Green Peas
  • 2 large Carrots (Thinly sliced)
  • 1 small Onion (minced)
  • 1 Jalapeno (minced )
  • 2 Garlic (Cloves)
  • 1/4 cup Cilantro (Chopped)
  • 1 can Tomato Sauce (15 oz or 430g)
  • 1/2 cup Water
  • Neutral Oil
  • Ground Cinnamon
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper

Making the Green Peas

I started by cooking the onions and the jalapenos with the salt, pepper and cinnamon powder in a large pan until the onions became translucent. I then added the garlic and the cilantro and cooked everything together for 2 minutes. I added my carrots and cooked everything for another 5 minutes or until the garlic started to get slightly brown. I then added the tomato sauce and half a cup of water to stop the garlic from cooking. I covered the pan and let the mixture simmer on medium heat until the carrots are soft and not crunchy. I finally added the frozen peas, and let them simmer for another 10 minutes.

I served some white rice along my green peas, and decorated the rice with a pinch of cinnamon. This is a well balanced, healthy, and filling meal.

Enjoy! :
