Chili Beans

Before the Pandemic, I visited my husband’s aunt. She made chili beans, I had never tried this dish before and I loved it. I decided to take the recipe and make it by myself and share it with you. Let’s cook together and have some fun! 🙂

This recipe makes 4 portions.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans Red Kidney Beans (washed)
  • 1 medium Onion (chopped)
  • 1 Jalapeno (chopped)
  • 2 Garlic Cloves (crushed)
  • 1/2 lb or 250 g Ground Beef
  • 2 medium Tomatoes (grated)
  • 1 tbsp Tomato Paste
  • 1 cup Beer or 1 cup of Beef Broth or Vegetable Broth
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1 tsp Cinnamon Powder
  • 1 tsp Cumin
  • 1 tsp Coriander Powder
  • 1 tsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Paprika
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper

Making the Chili Beans

I sauteed my onions and jalapenos in a dutch oven on medium heat until the onions became translucent. I then added my garlic and cooked for a further 2 minutes. After that, I added my ground beef and cooked them until they became brown. I made sure to break up my ground beef into small pieces while they cooked. When they became brown, I added all my spices, and mixed them in. I then added my beer, sugar, tomato paste, and grated tomato and mixed everything together. I left them on medium heat until they got to a simmer. Once they got to a simmer, I mixed in my kidney beans and lowered the heat to low and covered my dutch oven. I left my dutch oven on low heat for 45 minutes then served. I served my Chili Beans with some crackers, but they may be served with chips or baked pita chips. I garnished my plate with some green onions and cheddar cheese. We enjoyed them with some homemade guacamole and sour cream.

This recipe is a bit time consuming but very easy to make. It is definitely worth the time you put into making it because it is delicious. You can also customize this recipe to your liking. You can make it a vegan dish if you don’t add the meat. You can add as much meat as you want if you are a meat lover and you can substitute the beer with broth if you want.

Enjoy! 🙂
